In a recent statement Berger announced, "I am a realist. My work alternates between nature and social commentary." Clearly, these poles form the boundaries of her own art, which has spanned the last five decades. But in a larger sense, her core concerns articulate the range and function of realism itself. Realism in art – the idea that pictorial imagery should reflect the visible world around us – inherently involves both nature and society.
